TRAVEL: Mexico, week one

It has been one week since I hopped on a plane to Mexico and left my life in Toronto behind.

Since then, I have explored the wonders of Mexico City (Ciudad de Mexico – CDMX), including:

  • Chapultepec – beautiful and important park to visit18451952_10158734045945002_76020439_o

  • Teotihuacan – I am still in awe with the Piramides de sol y de la luna.18452189_10158734045990002_1075567617_o
  • Tepoztlán – a cute and magical ‘new age’ town, the home of Quetzalcoatl, the Aztec feathered serpent God, and climbed Tepozteco… an intense climb, but it was worth the view18426691_10158734046260002_1770238389_o

 

It took a little while to adjust to the most populated city in North America, especially since barely anyone speaks English. Luckily I had a few years of Spanish under my belt and Google Translate to carry me through.

 

I stayed in a hostel that I booked through Hostel World (Mexico City Hostel), which was right in the middle of the Centro Historico; all within walking distance to many landmarks, museums, restaurants, and stores.

 

On Monday, I moved to Puebla, a city two hours south of CDMX and is known for their historical influence, especially during the Battle of Puebla, on ‘cinco de Mayo’ in 1862. I am using Couchsurfing for my stay here. I’m so fortunate to be with Carlos, his sister Noely, and their three perros (dogs) Mozart, Nina, and Hassel.

 

In my opinion, Couchsurfing is the best way to travel. Accommodations are free and you treat the host’s home as if it were your own. Even if you can’t stay with someone, you can become friends with him or her, and time permitting, they can show you around their city. It works both ways too; if you have space for someone, you can host in your city. It’s collaboration between networks; exactly how life should and needs to be.

 

Yesterday, I visited Cholula in hopes to explore the Great Pyramid and its tunnels, although I was cut short because it was closed to the public. However, I managed to climb to the top of the hill to the church, Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remediosa. The Spanish built that church after conquering the city in the 1600s.

Even though I’m a week into my trip, I feel like I have been here for a lifetime. I’m getting used to the stares from people, being the only blonde. Secretly I know they’re admiring me, but I won’t let my ego get too big J

 

Today I visited two of Puebla’s famous cathedrals, La Catedral, Mexico’s second-largest and oldest (started construction in 1535 using Baroque & Renaissance styles) and the Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán. As I’m typing away, I’m people watching in the Zócalo – the whole city was built around this square and is based on numbers (Calle 2, Avenida 2, etc.) Everywhere I look, I see a piece of stunning architecture. I feel truly blessed to be here.

 

I have a few more days in Puebla before I make my way south to Oaxaca… that will be a treat… stay tuned for photos and more information.

 

I am so glad and proud of myself for taking the big leap and step out of my comfort zone. I love Toronto, I really do, but it has a lot to learn from other cities and cultures.

 

One minor detail that could be improved: stop flushing toilet paper down the toilet… it clogs up the pipes and has major difficulties decomposing through the water system… there is a purpose for putting a garbage beside the toilet!

Four ways to find a mentor

It’s important for us to have some sort of guidance while we are growing and building ourselves and/or our businesses.
The question is: how do I find a mentor? You can look towards your family and friends and their circles for support, however, I believe that it comes down to you asking your highest/future self for guidance. What qualities do you want to embody when you’re older? Where do you see yourself in 10-20 years? Start being that – confident, smart, articulate, successful self. When the student is ready, the master will appear.

 

Ask

Just ask!  It’s so easy, yet we let fear take over. We are so lucky to have the Internet and the ability to access the entire world at our fingertips. We have the potential to find and contact anyone. Say you’re interested in a particular industry, start by researching the key influencers. Study them and figure out what makes them tick.
Realistically, these people receive hundreds of emails per day, so how will you stand out? Get their attention and start interacting with them via social media. Then take the chance and ask them to meet for coffee or even a quick phone call, but you have to make it worth their time. What makes you so special and deserving? Be confident and don’t give up.

 

Ten Thousand Coffees

I was introduced to this website last year and have had many successful coffee meet ups. It’s easy to use – simply register, create a profile, and start networking. If someone catches your eye, message them, and ask when they’re available to meet for coffee. It’s amazing because individuals and organizations are there for a common purpose – to network and build meaningful relationships and create a sense of community.

 

Attend networking events

I love networking events because you never know who you will meet. A simple Google search will show you networking events in your area. An excellent resource is BizNetworkNews. The Founder, Jennifer Beale is fantastic; she also organizes the Summer Networking Bash. I met my business mentor through someone else I had met at that event, so trust me, it works!

 

Join a professional association

The majority of professional associations have a mentorship component as one of its member values. The way it works, according to my association, IABC/Toronto, a junior member (mentee) gets paired up with a senior member (mentor) and they have monthly discussions on various topics.

 

I believe that if you really want to find a mentor, you need to be vulnerable to ask. If you don’t ask, you won’t receive. A mentorship is a relationship that you need to build and nurture over time. It’s a good idea to discuss the boundaries, expectations, and meeting times at the beginning, to build a trust and consensus. Then, it’s just a matter of holding yourself accountable to be punctual and do your werk.
When you meet with your mentor, don’t refrain from asking questions. They are here to help guide you through your path, similar theirs, so they understand what you are going through. If something doesn’t agree with you, acknowledge their point of view and make your own decision. Trust your intuition. After all, this is your own journey; they’re just helping you skip a few paiges (lol! ;))

G R A T I T U D E

I touched on gratitude in the last post of my old blog. To this day, I continue to believe that gratitude is one of the most important factors to success and well-being.

Not only does it improve psychological, mental, and physical health, it also improves your way of life by eliminating negative thoughts with positive ones.
“Negative experiences weigh more on the minds of humans than positive ones, so much so that some psychologists have estimated it takes three good emotions to balance out a single bad one.” (Gulli, Maclean’s) There is another example in that article of how Janice Kaplan suffered from food poisoning and was grateful for it – it allowed her to make the pain more bearable because she knew that it would be gone the next day.

Personally, I have noticed a shift in my perspective and emotions. I feel so alive and more aware of small things, which I usually turned a blind eye to.

Last year, I decided to try something based off of a photo I found from Pinterest:

I got through a few months and then I stopped. However, I came across the 5 Minute Journal and decided to make one on my own.

Every morning, I would wake up and write down:
– Three things that I’m grateful for
– Three positive things that I wanted to happen that day
– One positive affirmation

I went about my day and then before I went to sleep, I finished off with:
– Three good things that happened to me that day
– One thing that could have made my day better.

There are other journals now that elaborates on these points and dives deeper into calls of action, such as; ‘three actions you can take towards your big dreams,’ and ‘three actions towards your happiness.’

I am much more grounded in my gratitude practice today. I journal a few times per day as it is and I can feel the results. I am a lot happier, healthier, and more excited in the mornings to see how my days will play out and I can go to sleep with a smile knowing that I have accomplished a few amazing things that day.

There is a window of opportunity that is allowing us to create change for a better life for ourselves. It’s really important that we take note of this as the whole world starts to shift.  To be honest, I am glad that Trump got into power; like anyone, I have my positive and negative views towards him. He has brought up a lot of emotions and feelings that the prior governments have suppressed (fear, anxiety, rage, etc.).

He ran for office in his own way and has succeeded. Whatever things he has done in the past (especially towards women) is in the past. However, I do not agree with him taking away reproductive measures for women; I truly hope that changes. We live in the now and we are preparing for the future.  I know for one thing that the culture has to be returned to the citizens of the states and that is his primary intention.

I hear different views all the time from different classes of people. What is important is how YOU feel and to not care about what other people think.  If you talk the talk, you better walk the walk. If you want to make a difference, then DO IT.

Admit that the waters around you have grown and accept it, that soon you’ll be drenched to the bone. If your time to you is worth savin’, then you better start swimmin’ OR you’ll sink like a stone.

Getting over your struggles

There are many times in a person’s life where they may feel defeated. I for one, feel like this quite a lot, but I remember that there’s something inside of me that just keeps fighting and doesn’t want to give up.

I have battled anxiety and depression. When I was in university, I put myself under too much stress due to procrastination, which resulted me to have heart palpitations and a panic attack. The school doctor put me on anti-anxiety meds and told me that I would be fine… I went crazy! So I took myself off of them and ended up being just fine. This is just one example, but I know some of you can relate.

Flash forward to today.
I have exactly $2.42 in my bank account, $5 and some change, and approximately $60K in debt AND I have bills coming out of my ying-yang. But you know what? There’s so much more to life than just paying bills. We weren’t put on this earth to just work to pay bills and die. I look at my life and see how hard I work trying to survive and maintain this ‘abundance’ outlook on life.

As an entrepreneur, it is NOT easy and I know that. I’m in this situation because I put myself there; I have goals and dreams- reminding myself this keeps me going. My faith and my connection with Source keeps me going. I have a job to do on this Earth and I won’t give up, no matter how hard life can be.

We all struggle; if we didn’t, there wouldn’t be any growth or change. It’s just a matter of acknowledging it, forgiving yourself, and continuing on with an open heart and mind. Life doesn’t have to suck. There are so many opportunities and resources available, you just have to be willing to look.

At the end of the day, just know that you are supported no matter what. Do things that bring you joy versus having a cloud of fear and doubt over your head. If you give positive energy, you will receive it. That’s the law.

How to not let your ego get the best of you

I wrote the following in September 2016. Four months later, I have gained a new understanding of the ego and will fill you in on another blog post.

I went for a run one morning and then ‘Numb’ by Linkin Park started to play on shuffle… *AHA moment*

The lyrics in the song could be portrayed like the ego.

“Can’t you see that you’re smothering me, holding too tightly, afraid to lose control? ‘Cause everything that you thought I would be has fallen apart right in front of you.”

It is clearer in the chorus:

“I have become so numb, I can’t feel you there; become so tired, so much more aware. I am becoming this, all I want to do is be more like me and be less like you.”

What do you think? Your authentic self vs. your ego?

First off, the ego is the little voice inside of your head that is insecure, anxious and fearful. Yet on the other hand, it is your sense of survival. According to Freud, it is the psychological component to conscious-decision making; the ego influences your thinking. It’s like the devil on your shoulder. I will elaborate on this in a future post.

Have you heard the old story about the two wolves?

A Cherokee grandfather tells his grandson that there is a fight going on inside of him between two wolves. One wolf is horrid; he is anger, greed, hatred, arrogance, self-pity, and the ego. The other wolf is loving, kind, compassionate, joy, helpful, and living in abundance.
He mentions that everyone else has the battle between the two wolves inside of him or her. The grandson took a moment and asked, “which one wins?” The grandfather said, “the one I feed.”

I am learning something new each and every day as I remind myself about the meaning of these stories. We are extremely fortunate to have options. We have the choice to do something good and be at service to others or go through an endless cycle of overthinking and resentment. In order to get whatever your heart desires, you must first check and accept your ego at the door and release.

Love what you do. If you’re not happy, change your mindset and situation. Stop complaining, and most importantly, be grateful. You are here to love yourself and others, while letting your light shine through in your work.
